The United States Navy (so-called USN) is one of the branches of the U.S. Military which was made up of approximately 349,593 personnel on active-duty and 101,583 reservists in 2021.

The U.S. Navy height and weight standards are hard to meet, aren’t they? Like other military branches, the US Navy has also set their own strict height and weight standards that all  Naval personnel are required to meet.

Normally, the stature and weight measurement is taken at the recruiting station (MEPs) to gain entry into the military. Furthermore, there is also a minimum height and weight standard for the Navy workforce. Therefore, if you are too tall, short or overweight, you may not be eligible for military service. Now, let’s dig deep into these naval requirements. Remember to take our free ASVAB Practice Test to pass your military enlistment exam with a high percentile.

1. Navy Height Standards Measurement

us navy height and weight measurements
Navy Height Standards Measurement

Both new maritime recruits or currently serving members must pass a physical test and body fat guidelines to ensure that they meet the Navy height and weight standards and stay in good shape to persevere the rigors of their work and mission. For the Naval Force stature limits, uniformed members aged from 18 to 39 must be from 60 to 80 inches in height.

Take Note: Your body should be straight but not rigid, your feet should be on a flat surface, and your chin should be parallel to the floor to obtain an accurate height estimate.

2.  Navy Weight Standards Measurement

Like the U.S. Army Weight standard requirements, the Navy also uses the weight standards to determine what further screening is needed for candidates because only those who haven’t met the Navy weight requirements for their height will be continuously measured for body fat percentage.

The weight benchmarks for the maritime force are used to determine what further screening is needed for applicants. Only applicants not meeting the Navy weight requirements for their height will be measured for body fat proportion.

3. Maximum U.S. Navy Height and Weight Standards by Charts

All officer and enlisted non-prior service and prior service applicants for the Active Duty and Reserve components of the U.S. Navy are required to meet the weight and height to be eligible for enlistment and serving.

Furthermore, official weight and stature estimations are typically used by the Army workforce to evaluate an applicant’s physical condition. The MEPs’ physical examination will include an authorized evaluation of their height and weight (U.S. Military Entrance Processing Station).

According to the following guidelines, estimates of height and weight will be rounded up or down to the nearest inch as follows:

  • Round down if the height division is less than a half-inch.
  • Round up if the official height difference is a half-inch or more.
  • Circular down if the weight division is less than 0.5 pounds.
  • Circular up if the weight division is a half-pound or more.

For example, if your present weight is 169,7 Ibs (pounds), the weight that will be recorded as your official weight is exactly 170 lbs. Let’s see the chart below to learn more about the Navy Maximum Height and Weight Charts:

4. Abdominal Circumference Measurement (ACM)

Don’t panic if you surpass the maximum weight standard on the charts above, because you are required to take an abdominal circumference measurement afterwards and if your measurement is equal to 39 inches or less for men or 35.5 inches or less for women, you may still qualify to serve in the military.

Take note: It should be noted that for both men and women, the Abdominal Circumference Measurement (ACM) is only implemented on bare skin, at the highest hip bone with the arms at both sides of yours after you’ve breathed out and the arms down to the sides.

5.  Body Fat Measurement

A further measuring is conducted to determine applicants’ fat proportion unless you qualify based on the height/weight chart and the abdominal circumference measurement. In other words, unless you meet the ACM, the minimum body fat measurement must be met.

  • For males at the age of 17 to 39 years old, the percentage of body fat which is determined by a neck and abdomen estimation must be no more than 22%.
  • For females at the age of 17 to 39, the proportion of body fat which is determined by a neck, waist, and hip measurement must be equal or under 33%.

If you exceed these body-fat measures, you are regarded as overweight and required to enter a compulsory and strict weight-loss program.

5.1. Measuring For The Body Fat Percentage

Those who weigh more than the maximum allowed for the Navy must have measurements taken at the neck and belly for males and taken at the neck, natural waist and the hips for females to see if they otherwise meet the body fat percentage threshold. This estimate of body fat percentage is required.

  • When measuring the neck and abdomen in males, the neck measurement (in inches) is subtracted from the abdominal measurement to get the circumference value (in inches) as the following formula: (abdomen – neck = circumference value)
  • When measuring a female’s circumference, the neck measurement is subtracted (in inches) from the natural waist PLUS hips measurement to get the circumference figure (in inches) as the following formula: (natural waist + hips – neck = circumference value)

The neck measurement will be conducted on bare skin, at the place immediately below the larynx (so-called Adam’s Apple) and perpendicular to the long axis of the neck. The individual being measured must have their shoulders down and be untense while looking straight ahead. Remain upright! Make sure the measuring tape is as horizontal as is physiologically possible (the line in the front of the neck should be the same height as the line in the rear), and make sure you are measuring the neck and not the trapezius muscles while doing so.

us navy height and weight requirements
The Neck Measurement for Body Fat percentage

The abdomen measurements will be taken bare-skinned, across the belly button, and with the arms at the sides. Take measurements at the end of a normal, comfortable exhale. Additionally, much as when measuring the neck, make sure the subject is standing straight and the measuring tape is horizontal.

The hip measurement should be taken over shorts only because like control-top pantyhose, spandex tights, and other “shaping” clothing that can give an inaccurate measurement, the shorts cannot be form-fitting. The person taking the measurement should face the subject’s right side when taking the measurement. The biggest bulge of the gluteus muscles, as seen from the side, should be covered by the tape when it is wrapped around the hips. The tape must be parallel to the ground and level. To reduce the impact of clothing, apply enough tension to the tape.

The formula developed at the Naval Health Research Center (NHRC), San Diego, California are used to calculate the US Navy body fat

For men,

%BF = 495 / ( 1.0324 – 0.19077 * log10( waist – neck ) + 0.15456 * log10( height ) ) – 450

And for women:

%BF = 495 / ( 1.29579 – 0.35004 * log10( waist + hip – neck ) + 0.22100 * log10( height ) ) – 450

Please note that the formulas presented above are for measurements in metric units.

The limit of body fat percentage for US Navy service members:

  • Age 18 to 21 – 22% for males, 33% for females;
  • Age 22 to 29 – 23% for males, 34% for females;
  • Age 30 to 39 – 24% for males, 35% for females;
  • Age over 40 – 26% for males, 36% for females.

Now, let’s check your body fat by using our following chart below!

5.2. Male Body Fat Percentage Estimation Chart

Take note: The body fat percentage is lower than or equal to the smallest body fat percentage in the column for circumference values that are lower than the figure in the table. In contrast, Body fat percentage is more than or equal to the maximum body fat percentage in the column for circumference values greater than the value in the table.

6.  Navy Minimum Body Mass Index (BMI) Standard

Body Mass Index (so-called BMI), applied to most adults 18-65 year old, is computed by using a person’s height and weight. More specifically, the formula is BMI = kg/m^2 where kg is a person’s weight in kilograms and m2 is their height in metres squared. Normally, a BMI of 25.0 or more is overweight, whereas, the healthy range is 18.5 to 24.9. Let’s check your Body Mass Index online!

The MEPs (stands for Military Entrance Processing Station) and the Chief Restorative Officer(abbreviated to CMO) will take into account any fundamental medical or psychiatric conditions that lead to being underweight via doing a thorough medical record audit and examination if candidates with a Body Mass Index (which is also known as BMI) below 19.

It should be noted that applicants who are down to 17.5 BMI may still be qualified for entering the Navy workforce. However, if you are below 17.5 BMI, you may be temporarily disqualified and given a 4-day delay for each pound under Naval standard. Let’s check the weight in pounds at BMI 19 and BMI 17.5 according to height in inches.
